In the early 20th century, a group of Russian spiritual Christians arrived in eastern British Columbia.
The Doukhobors, as they were known, had been forced from their home across the world.
Over the next several years, 8,000 Doukhobors would make their way to Canada.
Today, 20,000 Doukhobor descendants live in Canada, although only one third actively practice.
But like before, pacifism remains central to their beliefs — aspiring, as one leader once put it, to “toil and peaceful life.”

The Doukhobors, Russian-speaking immigrants who arrived in Canada beginning in 1899, are known primarily to the Canadian public through the sensationalist images of them as nude protestors, anarchists, and religious fanatics.
In response, they were hosed down, arrested, and jailed.
Materials on the Doukobors in Canada can be found in the USask Library using these subject headings: Veregin House, Veregin, SK Special Collections Manuscripts Collection - MSS C55/1/4.2e/1.
